The world's first STRETCH BREATHABLE drysuit diving system - 01/04/11
BARE defines the future of drysuit diving – At DEMA 2010 BARE released its newest drysuit and drysuit layering combination called the SB SYSTEM. The SB SYSTEM is the world’s first STRETCH BREATHABLE drysuit diving system. Each layer of the system uses 4-way STRETCH to deliver “next-to-skin” fit and unparalleled freedom of movement, and BREATHABILITY to move moisture away from your skin and exhaust trapped humidity, keeping the diver warmer, drier and more comfortable throughout the dive and on the surface. The performance inspired SB SYSTEM has been developed together with BMW Group DesignworksUSA.
“Our inspiration for this system came from a considerable amount of research that indicated drysuit diving was often considered to be cold, uncomfortable and generally restrictive above and below the water. This defined the product development direction; however, the real challenge was to design a drysuit diving system that would resolve these drysuit diving problems. To accomplish this great feat, we knew we required a pool of ideas outside of the diving industry that would deliver something innovative and unique and continue to position BARE as a premium drysuit manufacturer. To achieve this we enlisted the help of BMW Group DesignworksUSA – a global design consultancy born out of the cutting-edge vitality of Southern California’s design and car culture.”
BMW Group DesignworksUSA collaborated with the BARE team to uncover new design and product innovation opportunities. The DesignworksUSA team went underwater to understand the entire dive experience as well as conducting numerous interviews with divers, dive shops, and dive masters. From the research, we translated the findings into a wide range of design directions; ultimately working with the BARE team to develop a new design language for the SB System. The design language focused on performance, motion, and a strong visual identity.
The result of this collaboration is a drysuit diving system that is made up of three layers – drysuit, mid layer and base layer – each having STRETCH and BREATHABLE characteristics.
The drysuit uses a proprietary blend of fabrics exclusive to BARE. Between the highly abrasion resistant outer shell and the interior lining, is a stretch breathable polyurethane membrane that is the secret to allowing the suit to STRETCH and BREATHE. The breathability characteristic of the drysuit means any humidity trapped inside the suit will be exhausted on the surface – pre and post dive. The BREATHABILITY eliminates the buildup of condensation in the system thereby avoiding overheating and sweating and allowing the diver to maintain a balanced body temperature on the surface. The significant STRETCHABILITY provided by this unique combination of fabrics allows this front-entry suit to be donned and doffed without the need for excess torso length requiring control with an external crotch strap
The mid layer garment is the main source of insulation for the system. This compression-resistant fabric made from polyester / spandex is the world’s first fleece material developed specifically for use by divers under a drysuit. Many traditional undergarments use High Loft materials that when compressed under drysuits, lose much of their insulation. The BARE 4-way STRECH BREATHABLE mid layer garments are low profile, form fitting, and reduce bulk, helping create a streamlined profile and reduce weight requirements. Their compression resistance helps maintain the diver’s core temperature throughout the dive. They also possess quick drying properties for rapid evaporation, are anti-microbial, and incorporate moisture management technology to keep moisture moving away from the skin.
The base layer is made from an advanced STRETCH BREATHABLE fabric made from a blend of polyester / polypropylene / spandex. This fabric draws moisture away from the body creating a “next-to-skin” dry zone and then disperses the moisture over a larger surface allowing it to evaporate quickly. This form-fitting base layer is the first stage in moisture movement away from the skin keeping you drier and more comfortable throughout the dive.
