Moreover, it highlights BARE’s remarkable commitment to environmental consciousness by avoiding PFCs in most of our products.
The Ubiquitous Nature of PFC
Perfluorinated chemicals, or polyfluorinated chemicals (PFC) are man-made chemicals that have been extensively used since the mid-20th century in a wide array of products, thanks to their remarkable water- and grease-resistant properties. These characteristics make them suitable for applications like waterproofing clothing, producing non-stick cookware, and even manufacturing firefighting foams. Unfortunately, these same properties contribute to their environmental persistence.
PFCs don’t easily break down, earning them the nickname “forever chemicals.” This persistence has led to widespread contamination of water sources, soil, and even the air, causing concerns for both human health and wildlife.
PFC in Clothing
One concerning area where PFCs have found their way is within our clothing. Many waterproof and stain-resistant garments owe their performance to PFC-treated fabrics. From raincoats and activewear to outdoor gear, these chemicals enhance garment longevity and convenience. However, this convenience comes at a cost.
When PFC-treated clothing goes through washing cycles, these chemicals can leach into the water supply, contributing to contamination. Research indicates that PFCs can transfer from clothing to the skin and potentially be absorbed by the body, raising alarms about potential health effects.

In a realm where convenience often overshadows environmental responsibility, BARE takes pride in our commitment to sustainability. We’ve chosen not to include PFC in our products where possible as a testament to our dedication to our environmental commitment.
To further our environmental commitment, we’ve shifted away from single-use poly bags, driven by EU regulations. We’ve embraced PLA (Polylactic Acid) Recyclable/Compostable Bags for our wetsuits and reusable mesh bags for items like boots, gloves, and hoods. Cardboard boxes now house our Exowear and Ultrawarmth Base Layers. Similarly, our colleagues at BARE Sports Europe in our Malta Production Facility have transitioned to PLA bags for the products manufactured there. From wetsuits to drysuit blanks, our packaging choices now embody our dedication to eco-conscious practices.
BARE’s commitment to sustainability is evident through its innovative practices. By utilizing limestone-based foam in our wetsuits, BARE not only maintains performance standards but also reduces pollution. The incorporation of dope-dyed fibers further exemplifies our dedication to effectively curbing pollution and minimizing wastewater discharge. Moreover, BARE’s use of water-based glue demonstrates a conscientious approach, sparing the air from the release of harmful toxins. These thoughtful choices underscore BARE’s mission to harmonize high-quality products with environmentally responsible practices.
The presence of PFCs in clothing highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to sustainability in fashion. As consumers, understanding the materials we wear empowers us to demand safer options.
